Art Galleries With Less of a Profit Motive Flourish in Brooklyn
The New York Times reports on the “art-for-art’s-sake gallerists” of Bushwick, Brooklyn. These galleries are about art, community and culture, rather than business, the art ‘industry’ and big, big money.
Check out Jason Irwin’s Privateer Gallery and nonprofit arts foundation Norte Maar, Austin Thomas’s Pocket Utopia, and Garrison Buxton’s Ad Hoc Art.
“We’re not into the whole hype. We do it for ourselves.” — Austin Thomas
We note that Buxton is encouraging artists to produce smaller pieces he can sell at a lower price point. We applaud this — it creates a way in for new collectors, it makes it possible for artists to work as artists, and it keeps this most valuable and vulnerable of cultures alive. Bravo!
